How will I know if my fillings need to be replaced?
Your dentist can diagnose the need to replace fillings and make treatment recommendations. The materials used in fillings can begin to wear away over time. When this occurs, the filling becomes a trap for plaque and bacteria. In time, a cavity can develop. See your dentist every six months to avoid additional discomfort and damage.

What is Zoom! whitening? How does it compare to other forms of whitening?
There are several ways to whiten your teeth. Your local Metro Dentalcare clinic can help you determine the best whitening method for your unique smile.
The Zoom! whitening system requires just one dental appointment and achieves the same results as tray whitening, but within hours instead of weeks. The average patient's teeth will be about eights shades lighter after the procedure. Zoom! uses whitening gel and a special lamp to increase the effectiveness of the gel by 26%!
Tray whitening uses custom-made trays to fit your teeth. This requires at least two appointments to be fitted for the trays. When the trays are complete, you fill the trays with gel and wear them each night at home for a period of about two weeks. The average patient's teeth will be about eight shades lighter after the procedure.
Various whitening products can be purchased over the counter; however, these products usually cannot get your teeth as white as trays or Zoom! and it often takes much longer to see results. As with all whitening systems or products, results may vary and sensitivity can occur.

Why do my gums become sensitive and bleed during brushing?
Sensitive, bleeding gums can occur for several reasons - ranging from medical problems or pregnancy, to being overdue for a cleaning, having periodontal (gum) disease or having improper home care (brushing & flossing). A build up of plaque or tartar increases the amount of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria contributes to swollen gums resulting in bleeding and tenderness. For a proper diagnosis regarding your specific concerns, schedule a dental appointment at the Metro Dentalcare clinic nearest you.

When should I bring my child in for his/her first appointment?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see a dentist by age one. Tooth decay among toddlers has been on the rise and seeing the dentist early can help combat this trend. All of the Metro Dentalcare clinics accept and are prepared to treat young children. Please contact a clinic near you to schedule a "Happy" visit for your child. The purpose of your child's initial visit is to create a trusting and positive experience.
The dental hygienist will see the child, and introduce him/her to the dentist and the dental environment. Next, the hygienist will proceed to counting teeth, polishing teeth and taking pictures (x-rays), if the child is willing and reacting positively. At Metro Dentalcare we want to instill a positive image of the dentist and the dental experience to your child. We also have pediatric dental specialists on staff at our Anoka and Burnsville locations who are specially trained to provide dental care for all kids, especially those who are very young or anxious.
